MEET DON COLLINS

The inception of Fathers of Professional Athletes stems from a recognition of the challenges that families face when navigating the pathway to collegiate athletics. Don Collins, father of NFL Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins, understood that the journey to becoming a student-athlete at any collegiate level—be it Division 1, Division 2, Division 3, or NAIA—requires significant effort, guidance, & resources. On the path to professional athletics, Don & his family navigated the realms high-school & college football, where the Texans selected his son in the 2021 NFL draft.

Don recognized early that the athletics path is a complex and often overwhelming process, not only for the student-athletes but for their families as well. As a parent, there was a moment of realization when he understood that high school coaches, while dedicated, often juggle multiple athletes. Therefore they have limited ability to provide the individualized attention needed for each player to shine.  This realization highlighted the need for parents to take a more proactive role in their child's athletic & academic development. In response, Fathers of Professional Athletes was founded to empower parents with the knowledge & tools necessary to advocate for their children effectively.

"Why should another family have to face the same challenges & lessons we've encountered?" Don said. "By sharing knowledge & resources, we can work towards ensuring every student-athlete has the best chance to succeed."

Father's of Professional Athletes outlined four initial areas they allow them to help that include: Community Support, Parental Guidance, Athletic Development & College Preparation.

This includes understanding NCAA eligibility requirements, fostering relationships with guidance counselors, & ensuring that student-athletes meet academic standards alongside their athletic pursuits. Fathers of Professional Athletes also emphasizes the importance of exposure to college coaches through sports camps & individual training. By connecting student-athletes with opportunities to showcase their talents, the organization aims to facilitate meaningful interactions that can lead to future collegiate prospects. The underlining mission of Fathers of Professional Athletes is to create a supportive community where parents can access resources, share knowledge, and help their children navigate the complexities of pursuing a collegiate athletic career increasing their opportunity to WIN!
